As we start a new calendar year, we are facing in a new direction.
What are your plans for the year?
Speaking from personal experience, New Year’s Resolutions are often wishful thinking and not always so easy to achieve. I may have met my goals on some past ideas but due to my hectic life, my habits, availability and evolving interests, some things were forgotten, discarded, put aside…
Humans tend to reach high, which isn’t bad but it’s good to remain realistic, even if idealistic. Most importantly, I believe that fostering positivity in whatever we are doing can help us achieve our goals and can prevent us from getting stuck.
Duh. So how do you stay positive? I take a deep breath in and give myself a gibberish pep talk and then just laugh.
Gibberish is a mix of sounds.
- Unintelligible or nonsensical talk or writing.
- Highly technical or esoteric language.
- Unnecessarily pretentious or vague language.
Positive Self Talk is good for me. This allows me to not take myself so seriously and be more playful.
This can lead to me reevaluating where I am/what I am doing/and understand what the purpose will be.
How important is this to me? What do I wish to achieve in the long run? This thought process also brings me to the present moment, not distracted but focused on what I wish to do next, spurring a conscious decision to get something done, to make something happen.
What are my goals this year?
To:
- finish my book and get it published.
- keep moving (stay active!)
- clean up my home office!
- do my best to spread more laughter.
Some of my goals are specific and some are purposely broad.
Negativity can lead to self sabotage and that’s not helpful. So here are some fun tips:
- Allot a few minutes each day towards obtaining your goal. For example if you wish to work out more, start with small increments and build up. Before you know it, you will be feeling improved and won’t mind adding more time.
Or, join a class where the teacher guides you and holds you accountable. Establish that routine!
- Celebrate your gradual achievements by doing a happy dance, enjoying a little treat. Give yourself a pat on the back and laugh!
Celebrate big when you’ve reached your final goal!! Cross it off your list, ha!
- Share your achievement by telling someone else about what you’ve done. This helps you hold yourself accountable. If you don’t have that person, chart your work by date/time/task/amount of time spent so that you can keep viewing your progress.
- Cut yourself some slack, if you aren’t able to work towards your goal because of outside forces. Laugh it off and then as soon as you are able, give yourself a pep talk and get back on track.
- Push yourself a little bit more! Laugh a bit and encourage yourself to make a bigger effort to achieve your goal. Sometimes all it takes is a the will to take it further. You can do it!
Whatever it is that you are trying to achieve, I wish you fortitude and whatever it takes for you to make it a reality.
Laughter Yoga helps us stay resilient, hopeful and creative. You’re only one laugh away…
May 2026 be a deeply fulfilling and bright year for you!
